Last night I cried.

I start my blogging career today, a day that comes after a night in which I cried. I hadn’t done that in awhile. The night that I did not think would come in my forty-one years on earth. I shed tears of joy, tears of hope, tears of encouragement and tears of
… Well I just needed to cry.

Joy, that America showed that it can pull together and rally behind a man that brings back feelings of JFK. A feeling that it is not about the individual but it is about the sum of all of our parts that makes us a great country. Knowing what I have been blessed with in my life up to this point and knowing that in order to move to the next level, I will have to sacrifice. In every team situation, just like on a society, you are only as good as your weakest link. I can lend a helping hand, lift up someone that my back can bear and I have plenty to get by, I can share my fruits with my fellow man.

Hope, that if we stick to the idea that we can turn this country around financially, socially and morally, we can see a better day for us and future generations to come.
I am encouraged by the seed that I think is truly planted by an African American man becoming president in this country. I have always heard as a child and told my children that “you could be anything you want”, “you could even be President” and now that I can see someone who looks like me actually became President. That is enough to grow a tree of encouragement on all the little brown and black boys and girls to believe in that statement. A tree that stands tall and branches that stretch and reach for all that can be imagined and dreamed about.

My mind is racing a mile a minute thinking about how if I was seven years old like my youngest daughter or if my dad was alive to see this day. What would I think at that age? Would I get the significance of yesterday? What would my dad say? How much of an impacted would the scene in Grant Park have on him? I wish I knew. Hell, I could only guess… but I know why I cried last night. What about you?
